Qubits in een vierkantje

Qutech-onderzoekers in de groep van dr.ir. Menno Veldhorst hebben germanium herontdekt als veelbelovend platform voor de quantum bits (qubits). Germanium werd als grondstof voor transistors gebruikt, maar is later massaal vervangen door silicium. In hun nieuwste publicatie in Nature (A four-bit germanium quantum processor) presenteren ze een functionele eenheid van 4 quantumbits in een vierkantje. In 2019 maakte de groep de eerste qubit in germanium, wat duidt op een verdubbeling ieder jaar.

In een korte video bespreekt wetenschapsjournalist Martijn van Calmhout de prestatie met onderzoeksleider Menno Veldhorst, postdoc dr. Giordano Scappucci en promovendus Nico Hendrickx.
