A square of qubits

QuTech researchers in Menno Veldhorst’s group have rediscovered germanium as a promising platform for quantum bits (qubits). Germanium was originally used as a raw material for transistors, but was later widely replaced by silicon. In their latest publication in Nature (A four-bit germanium quantum processor), the researchers present a functional unit of 4 quantum bits in a square. In 2019, the group made the first qubit in germanium, indicating a doubling every year.

In this short video, science journalist Martijn van Calmhout discusses the achievement with research leader Dr Menno Veldhorst, postdoc Dr Giordano Scappucci and PhD student Nico Hendrickx.
