De zeilers van het Team Delft Challenge zijn deze zomer als tweede geëindigd in het studentenklassement van de Tour de France á la Voile, het beste resultaat in zes jaar.
Een maand lang raceten vijfentwintig tien meter lange ‘Mumm 30-zeiljachten’, waaronder de Delft Challenge, door het Kanaal, de Golf van Biskaje en de Middellandse Zee.
“De laatste dag was alles nog mogelijk”, zegt bemanningslid en L&R-student Michiel van der Meulen (23). Het team raakte die dag een van de boeien aan die de startlijn markeert. Ze moest een strafrondje maken waardoor ze uiteindelijk als een van de laatste over de startlijn ging.
“We hebben toen een keiharde inhaalrace gevaren waardoor we een nipte voorsprong op het team uit Parijs (Normale Sup’ – Lagardère) behielden.”
Eerste in het studenten klassement werd CSC-HEC-Ecole Navale. Het algemeen klassement is gewonnen door Courrier Dunkerque.
Vanaf 2011 zal de Tour wellicht gevaren worden in een M34 van Archambault. Deze boot is special ontworpen voor de Tour de France en zal beter geschikt zijn voor langere offshores. “Het idee is dat we er dan ook trans-Atlantische races mee gaan varen”, zegt Van der Meulen enthousiast.
