9th Annual Norwegian Film Festival

The Norwegian Film Festival is held at Delft’s Filmhuis Lumen, October 29-31. In addition to the film program, there will also be a Festival Pub on Friday night, dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday, offering lots of opportunities to meet new people, mingle, talk movies and party Norwegian-style!

One of the must-see films screening this weekend is ‘United’ (2003), a romantic comedy about soccer, love and small town rivalry. It’s set on the southwest coast of Norway, where we meet Kre, the main character, a football crazy maniac who’s biggest dream is to become a professional football player for Manchester United, his favourite team, and to marry the prettiest girl in the world, Anna. Dreams that pretty much all little boys have. Kre, however, never lets go of his dreams, even though life has turned out slightly different. He’s still living in his small west coast town coaching the local boys soccer team and working as a warehouseman at the local shipyard, which is in financial difficulties. And then the only one part of his dream that has worked so far, his relationship with Anna, starts to unravel as Stian, Kres old rival, comes back to town after several years studying and travelling abroad.

Ostensibly, Stian has come to rescue the local shipyard, though his real intentions aren’t so noble, as they involve stealing Anna and profiting from laying off the workers at the shipyard. This is a film about two of greatest passions in the world: passion for love and passion for football. It’s a light-hearted comedy delivering lots of good laughs and is definitely one of the best Norwegian films of 2003.

Saturday October 30: 13:00 ‘Flklypa Grandpirx’, a rare puppet animation film from 1975, a Norwegian classic; 14:30 student films, short films produced and directed by Norwegian students; 19:00 ‘The Thailand project’, a movie about a human air project in Thailand; 19:30 ‘Himmelfall’, a Norwegian drama from 2002 with eight stories of eight people that are all somehow intertwined; 22:00 ‘United’, romantic comedy about love and soccer.

Sunday October 31: 14:30 ‘Bare Bea’ (Just Bea), a drama about being 16, in love and, in the words of director Petter Næss, “the conflicts between what you expect from life and what you’ve seen in the commercials”; 17:00 ‘Mannen som elsket Haugesund'(The man who loved Haugesund), a documentary about a Polish Jew who settles in Haugesund in 1911, built a clothing empire, escaped the Nazis during the WWII and how he remained the little west coast towns outsider.
