World party 3.0

What better way for foreign students to beat the winter blues than with a night of red-hot musica mestiza? Wildly popular in the more southerly climates, Mestizo music’s infectious beats are gaining popularity on the club circuit in the Netherlands.

Danceable, raw and rootsy, Mestizo offers a fresh and funky alternative to mainstream dance music. Speakers will host the third mestizo night, known as ‘Esparanza’, on Friday December 15. Opening the show will be the Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra, followed by resident DJ Tommi on the turntable spinning a selection of cumbia, mestizo and Balkan Beats.

It’s hard to describe what mestizo music is, as the genre refuses to be pigeonholed. But there is one thing all mestizo music has in common: it makes you move! It’s all about music without borders, combining the Western influences of rock, reggae, hiphop and ska, with sounds from…pretty much everywhere else. The new sound was pioneered in the early 90s by artists like Mano Negra and the Pogues. The term mestizo originated in Latin America to describe a person of mixed Spanish and Indian ethnicity – similarly, Mestizo music is a genre of mixed ancestry and differs per country, influenced by the musical style of the region.

DJ Tommi, Speakers’ resident DJ, describes his passion for mestizo: “It’s music with great energy and a great party vibe.” But doesn’t that describe all dance music? DJ Tommi elaborates: “It’s the kind of music everyone wants to dance to, not just the hip kids who go to the clubs. Mestizo can just as easily be played at a wedding or at the bar around the corner and wherever they spin it, it’s just a question of time before everyone is out on the dance floor.”

The Belgian-based group Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra will opening the show at Speakers. This up-and-coming band is made up of musicians from Antwerp and Macedonia who have been playing together since 2004, incorporating gypsy music, ska and Eastern European music influences in their live performances to keep toes tapping and the audience clapping. Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra has a variable line-up with different artists participating at each show – surefire guarantee that every new performance will be unique.

So what can we expect from this edition of Esparanza? DJ Tommi: “It’ll be a great dance party! We’ll take you on a musical trip from the world of Latin Pop to gypsy punk, so don’t miss it!”
