Three birds with one stone

Courage and achievement is the spirit behind the success of Chris Laumans, Arne Kaas and Stefan Roest, three MSc Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) students whose innovative idea for an energy efficient ‘HR pan’, which is twenty percent more efficient than regular cooking pans, took them the finals of the television program, ‘The Best Idea of the Netherlands’.

Their idea was one of the six – out of six thousand best ideas submitted – to make it to the finals. The students, who conducted their HR pan research at the Multi-Scale Physics department, now have a shot at winning the Eneco Sustainability prize as well.

Their success is also a proud achievement for the SET program and TU Delft, a testimony to the university’s motto: ‘Challenge the Future’. After all, as TU Delft professor, dr. Saul Lemkowitz, once told me, a university’s role is to teach students to challenge the status quo, think and criticize what is perceived as fact. Their success is also a clarion call for their SET classmates to think more critically about the practical solutions required to solve the world’s most pressing problems, like climate change and global warming. The future of humanity depends on the success of such innovative ideas.

There’s no doubt the climate is rapidly changing, as even personal experience reveals. Recently back from a three-month stay in Noord-Brabant, I’ve found Delft much colder than it was last year at this time. The good news is that scientists around the world have stepped up their efforts to arrest this development. And TU Delft is at the forefront of such groundbreaking research, as shown by innovative results obtained in its energy research drive, such as the discoveries made by the research group led by professor J.T. Pronk, at the biotechnology department of the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation, where innovative ideas employing the concepts of biotechnology and genetic modification are improving biofuel production. The group’s discovery marks a milestone in biofuels research and, as professor Pronk said, ‘this simple genetic modification kills three birds with one stone: no glycerol formation, higher ethanol yields and consumption of toxic acetate’. Yet, the professor notes, the ultimate eureka moment is still to come, because ‘for the potential billion-liter ethanol gain to be realized, follow-up research on the transfer of this concept to industrial yeast strains and real-life process conditions is required’. Nonetheless, patent applications and to collaborate with industrial partners to accelerate industrial implementation are in the works.
What these innovative ideas from students and researchers show is that all levels of the university are contributing to the ideals of sustainability as championed by the Delft Energy Initiative. TU Delft is showing that it has the potential to not only ‘challenge the future’ but also secure a brighter future through cutting-edge solutions to real world problems. This ‘courage to attempt, as Van Gogh envisioned, is the true foundation of our university.

Voor tweehonderd wooncontainers heeft Duwo een plek op het oog die grenst aan de campus. Waar precies wil vestigingsdirecteur Jan Willem van Beek niet zeggen, maar het zou gaan om een nog niet bebouwde plek waar volgens het bestemmingsplan mensen mogen wonen.
Van Beek wil met de eigenaar van de grond plannen maken om deze plek tijdelijk te gebruiken voor iets betere versies van de spaceboxen aan de Leeghwaterstraat. “Het zou zelfs nog kunnen voor het begin van het volgend collegejaar”, aldus Van Beek.
Om de investering en extra kosten voor de aanleg van het terrein, gas, water en licht eruit te krijgen, zouden de containers minimaal tien en eigenlijk twaalf jaar moeten staan, zegt Van Beek er direct bij.
Het zal er nog om spannen of dit plan van Duwo kan doorgaan. De Raad van State houdt donderdag een zitting over het bestemmingsplan TU Noord, dat woningbouw en de aanleg van tramlijn 19 bij het Mijnbouwplein en de Michiel de Ruyterweg mogelijk maakt.
Belangenvereniging TU Noord, een aantal bedrijven en de Vereniging Vrienden van de Delftse Botanische Tuin (zie kader) zijn het niet eens met het door de provincie goedgekeurde plan. Zij vrezen voor onder meer de luchtkwaliteit en de cultuurhistorische waarde van het gebied en willen niet dat er minder groen en speelvoorzieningen komen.
De gemeente Delft houdt er serieus rekening mee dat ze een milieueffectrapportage (mer) moet opstellen. Zo’n uitgebreid milieuonderzoek kan de bouw van 850 studenteneenheden in TU Noord ernstig vertragen. Ook de realisatie van studentenkamers op de rest van de campus kan gevaar lopen, omdat een mer meestal een vrij groot gebied beslaat.
Van Beek hoopt de tweehonderd containers grenzend aan de campus te kunnen plaatsen, maar weet nog niet of de mogelijke mer roet in het eten gooit. “Mijn slapeloze nachten gaan vooral over welk gebied bij een mer wordt bestreken”, zei Van Beek vorige week tijdens een bijeenkomst met raadsleden.
Behalve tweehonderd containers kan Duwo voor het eind van dit jaar nog eenzelfde aantal studentenkamers leveren door sociale huurwoningen van zichzelf om te bouwen. “Afhankelijk van de timing komen er misschien wel honderd kamers van andere corporaties bij”, zegt Van Beek.
Duwo lanceerde dit plan voor het ombouwen van sociale huurwoningen begin januari als oplossing voor de vertraging indien de gemeente inderdaad een mer moet laten opstellen.
Volgens de corporatie is er in Delft een groot overschot aan sociale huurwoningen. Met een deel daarvan, zo’n vijfduizend eenheden, mogen corporaties volgens Van Beek wat anders doen.
Na in kaart te hebben gebracht welke woningen Duwo zelf kan ombouwen, komt de corporatie deze week met een plan voor de wethouder. Om welke complexen het precies gaat, wil Van Beek daarom nog niet zeggen.
