Our ongoing review of the various student eettafels in Delft brings us to the Delftsche Zwervers (Rovers), where the students society’s great old building, excellent food and very friendly members make this a ‘must-eat’ place for students.

Of all student societies in Delft, the most explosive location belongs to the Delftsche Zwervers. This student society is not only the oldest student scouting group in the world (founded in 1915), but it is also situated at the Kruithuis, a former gunpowder ammunition dump built on the outskirts of Delft in 1660 to replace the previous ammunition dump, which was located in the city centre and had exploded six years earlier, taking much of the city with it.
Today, the Delftsche Zwervers student society still retains a connection to scouting and roving. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the Zwervers meeting days, when members prepare meals and after-dinner fun is organized. As you would expect of folks who own a tepee, the Zwervers are very relaxed people. Although the guys prefer if you call or email in advance, just dropping in for a meal isn’t a problem and there’s always some extra food left for spontaneous guests.
The spring like scenery is perfect, as me and Dave, my dinner companion, cycle through the old gate into the compound. Behind the building’s heavy doors, the dudes however are slightly surprised to have visitors, but as soon as we sit down at the upstairs table and dinner is served, we’re treated just like any other Zwerver.
Tonight’s menu is pasta Bolognese for meat-eaters, and pea soup served with French fries for vegetarians – all accompanied by French bread and soft cheese. The veggie soup is thick, warm and delicious, and Dave is also very happy with his Bolognese, proclaiming “for that much meat in the sauce you can wake me up anytime!”
By the time we get to the dessert, we’re all good mates. Tonight’s dessert is home made apfelstrudel (apple pie), served with whipped cream, and I must say it’s the best piece of apfelstrudel I’ve ever had. This dessert earns the meal a very big plus mark, in addition to the strong 8 out of 10 marks I already gave it.
After dessert we go downstairs for coffee, tea and beers for those who want them. A bicycle tour planned for the evening has been cancelled, so we stay indoors and play a social and also educative marketing board game. My team plays dirty, which causes both teams to ultimately go bankrupt, which we all laugh about. A great meal, fun and laughs after dinner…I think I might just become a regular here.
