Barend Dronkers (26), an MSc student from Calgary, Canada, studying applied physics, arrived in the Netherlands two weeks ago. Born in the USA, to Dutch parents, he moved back to the Netherlands when he was six months old.

He eventually landed in Canada, after living in the US and Germany with his parents. The hat on the table in front of him is of the Calgary Flames, the professional ice hockey team in his hometown. He is a lifelong fan of the team and got this hat when he was 13 years old. The hat is signed by the Flames’ star player, Jerome Iginla, who still plays for the team. Barend also played a lot of hockey growing up on the public ice rinks around Calgary, meeting up with friends to play games or playing pick-up games with whomever was at the rink that day.
