The book mentions several innovative and sustainable TU Delft projects. The writers cited various TU Delft projects as examples of sustainable, environmentally-friendly developments. The Green Left campaign bus will visit TU Delft during the lunch break on Friday.
Best scientist

Professor Joop Schoonman, professor of inorganic chemistry at TU Delft, has been voted the best Dutch materials scientist of the past 80 years in the Union of Material Science’s ‘2006 Dutch Masters in Materials’ election. The Union announced the election results during its 80-year anniversary celebrations held at the Aviodrome in Lelystad on 2 November. As a chemist, Schoonman’s research particularly focuses on sustainable energy, an area in which he applies his expertise in the field of solid-state material chemistry. His research has led to advances in the development of batteries, solar cells, fuel cells and hydrogen storage. Schoonman has 435 scientific publications to his name. Schoonman (1943) studied chemistry at the University of Utrecht (1967), and became a professor of inorganic chemistry at TU Delft in 1984. He has also served as director of science for the Delft Centre for Sustainable Energy since 2002.
EU certified

The European Commission has approved the use of the Eramus Mundus label for two Master’s degree programs that TU Delft and its foreign university partners will introduce next year. These two degree programs are ‘Optics in Science and Technology’ and ‘Coastal and Marine Engineering & Management’. The Erasmus Mundus label is a certified quality approval label granted to certain European ‘Top Joint Masters’ programs. The Erasmus Mundus program is intended to make European higher education more attractive for students from non-EU countries. It supports European partnerships that offer joint higher education programs in diverse fields. The selected top degree programs receive approximately 20 grants per year for talented students from non-EU countries. These students then follow courses at various European universities, and in this way they become familiar with more than just one European country. This year the European Commission has selected 23 Master’s degree programs.

Mashup

TU Delft, Microsoft and various small companies have started a contest for website developers. Whoever develops the best ‘mashup’ wins 2,500 euro. A mashup is a site that incorporates various Internet services. Ellen Dijkshoorn of Tam Tam, one the particiapating companies, offers an example of a mashup site as one that combines Google Maps with an online telephone directory: “You can then see where the person you are speaking to on the phone lives.” Microsoft hopes this contest will help promote its latest technolgy among TU Delft students.
