News in brief

Open-source carThe Foundation for Nature and the Environment and the three Dutch technological universities – TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and TU Enschede .

have unveiled their vision of the car of the future: c,mm,n. This is the first open-source car in the world and is a zero-emission 2+2 family car, powered by sustainable, reprocessed hydrogen. And c,mm,n is also a great example of communication technology, which optimizes mobility by making all forms of partnerships between motorists possible. The founders want to use this project to create a market for clean, futuristic mobility. The presentation of three lifelike 1:1 scale models (mock-ups) is currently to be send at the AutoRai show in a huge, 5-meter high green car parked in the middle of the Europa Hall. C,mm,n was developed in an online community similar to Wikipedia or Linux, and the car’s designs are freely accessible via the Internet. C,mm,n is a sustainable car, owing its unique use of technology: its hydrogen-powered fuel cell system, light and aerodynamic shape and the many possibilities it offers for reuse and recycling.
Bicyclists

Bicyclists in the center of Delft no longer need to get off their bikes when entering a pedestrian area. The mayor’s council and city council have agreed to make the entire car-free area of the city center freely accessible for bicyclists. This was already the case for much of the city, but the city council members decided that it was best to no longer make distinctions between certain areas of the city. However, some of the shop owners in the city center are unhappy with the plan, as they believe this will create dangerous situations for pedestrians, especially on crowded, narrow streets, such as the Jacob Gerritstraat. The council was also asked to consider the question if it was permitted for cyclists to bike in both directions on the streets lining the canals. The answer was ‘no’, because the streets are simply not wide enough for this two-way traffic.
High rank

On the recently released ranking of European universities, called the ‘Leiden Ranking’, TU Delft received a high ranking. The Leidse Center for Science and Technology Studies ranked Delft 11th. The ranking determines which institutions are conducting the most important research. In Europe, this is Oxford and Cambridge. The best Dutch university is the Erasmus University, which was ranked eighth. Utrecht University, Vrije University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam were 14, 15 and 16th respectively. Leiden University was ranked 23rd, and Groningen 24th.
