At 00:30 in the morning an average of some 100 students were still present in the library. During the second week of the exam period, from October 31 until November 6, library staff counted all visitors every hour. A second pilot project will take place next January.

Longer life

Another reason to remain here after graduation: the life expectancy of babies born between 2000 and 2010 in the Netherlands has increased substantially, according Statistics Netherlands. Life expectancy for Dutch males has risen from 75.5 to 78.8 years old, and for females from 80.6 to 82.7 years. Moreover, a third of all 65 year old women are expected to reach 90 years old. The probability that a 60 year-old Dutch person will live to 80 years old increased to 63 percent, compared to 52 percent in 2000. Approximately three- quarters of Dutch women are expected to live to 80 years old. For comparison purposes, in 2010 the average life expectancy in Russia was 63.03 years for men and 74.87 women. Or in Uganda, where the current average life expectancy is 52.17 years for men, and 54.33 for females.

Bottom-up approach

After having served as the dean of the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management for past three and half years, Professor Theo Toonen finally delivered his inaugural lecture last Friday. In an interview in Delta, Toonen says he is a proponent of the bottom-up approach and that is why he waited for so long. “Centralizing power doesn’t necessarily mean that you are in power,” the

professor philosophizes. “With a bottom-up approach, 90 percent of all

problems disappear.”

Sleeping beauty

Dutch and British researchers have uncovered networks of potential colon cancer genes with the aid of gene technology known as ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (Sleeping Beauty Transposon System), which identifies genes that may play a role in the occurrence of cancer. This may provide insights into the future prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Bioinformatics scientists at TU Delft supplied computer algorithms and statistical methods for the comparative

analyses. The research was published in Nature Genetics.

VirtuaLock

TU Delft students and employees can now protect their laptops against theft, as the university has purchased a software license from TU Delft technostarter, VirtuaLock. After installing software via www.tudelft.nl/virtualock, users can make a free virtualock-account, with which users watch over each other’s

laptops. When leaving their computers, users should lock them with the control-alt-delete buttons. When somebody tries to steal the laptop an alarm goes off, warning other VirtuaLock-users within 50 meters of the attempted theft, while the laptop’s owner receives an sms. 

BKO-certificaat
Dr.ir. Frank van der Zwan van de faculteit Luchtvaart- en Ruimtevaarttechniek krijgt donderdag als honderdste onderwijsgevende van de TU een BKO-certificaat. BKO staat voor Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs. De TU Delft voerde in 2002 als een van de eerste universiteiten de BKO in. Er zijn nu in Delft 134 docenten bezig met de BKO. Doel is activerender colleges en zo aantrekkelijker en effectiever onderwijs.

Knikkeren
Voor het vak mechatronica maken tweedejaars studenten werktuigbouwkunde in een week tijd knikkerfabrieken van een soort lego die vol hangen met sensoren en actuatoren en schrijven ze software voor de besturing. In de fabriekjes moeten glazen en metalen knikkers van elkaar gescheiden worden en in speciale containertjes terechtkomen. Op YouTube is al op tientallen strak gemonteerde filmpjes te zien hoe robotarmpjes, grijpertjes en schuifjes knikkers met staccatobewegingen op de juiste plek krijgen.

Eredoctor
Een gat in de muur van een IT-kantoor in New Delhi opende dr. Suga Mitra, het hoofd research aldaar, de ogen voor de onverwachte handigheid van kinderen uit de krottenwijk met computer en internet. Ze leerden het elkaar en noemden de cursor een naald en een directory een kastje. Ervaringen met zulke opstellingen brengen Mitra tot nieuwe onderwijsideeën. Mitra ontvangt bij de Dies-viering op 7 januari een eredoctoraat van de TU.

Strooien
De TU Delft was dit jaar goed voorbereid op de vroeg ingevallen kou. Dat zegt Remon Hartman van vastgoed. Vorig jaar ontstond er in heel Nederland een gebrek aan strooizout. Dit jaar heeft de universiteit extra zout ingekocht en inmiddels alweer bijgekocht. Meldingen van gladheid of sneeuw komen ‘s morgens rond zes uur binnen bij vastgoed. De strooiploeg van de groenvoorziening strooit eerst op doorgaande wegen en fietspaden, dan op parkeerplaatsen en dan op secundaire wegen en voetpaden.

27 miljoen
Met vertrouwen ziet het college van bestuur het juridische traject tegemoet over de 25 miljoen euro die de TU kreeg voor Bouwkunde. Dat geld eist staatssecretaris Zijlstra terug, maar collegevoorzitter Dirk Jan van den Berg zei vorige week tegen de ondernemingsraad dat de universiteit Twente (UT) bij een brand ‘wel wat had gekregen’. Er zou volgens hem dan ook sprake zijn van ‘rechtsongelijkheid’ als de TU niets krijgt. “Als je een rekensom maakt, zouden we eigenlijk 27 miljoen euro moeten krijgen.” Van den Berg verwijst naar een brand in het rekencentrum van de UT, in 2002. De schade bedroeg volgens een woordvoerder van de UT 30,4 miljoen euro. De universiteit kreeg van het ministerie 5 miljoen euro, maar moest wel aantonen het te hebben gebruikt voor huisvesting. De brand bij Bouwkunde kostte 170 miljoen euro.

Student organizations say the ‘National Student Housing Action Plan’ is a good first step, but the plan does not encourage the construction of non-independent student rooms. The action plan calls for the creations of 16,000 extra student rooms over the next four years, owing to smaller rooms being converted, empty buildings being renovated, and temporary student residences having their rental terms extended. Because regulations have now been changed, allowing rooms to be smaller than the current 28 m2, Jan Benschop, of Duwo, says they are now better able to convert rooms for international students. “For international students here for four years, the 28 m2 rooms are fine,” Benschop says. “But for those students who are here for half a year and want lower costs, you don’t need 28 m2 for a furnished room with a good desk and bed.”

The quote by Duwo’s head, Jan Benschop, in the previous news item, raises questions, given that TU Delft international MSc students in fact study at the university for two years (not for four). International exchange students are indeed in Delft for “half a year”, but Benshop’s confusing “four year” reference in his quote – “For international students here for four years, the 28 m2 rooms are fine” – begs the question: who is he referring to? Or by “four years” did he actually mean to say “two years”, and hence MSc students here for two years can expect to be given rooms measuring no less than 28 m2?
