Dance, friends, fun. That is the motto of the Rock ‘n Delft student society of TU Delft and they are passionate about teaching people the joy of dancing to rock and roll music.
Started in 2009 by two French PhD candidates, the association now has about 60 members including plenty of internationals. According to Bas Kleijweg, Rock ’n Delft member and Literary Studies student at Leiden University, the founders were into dancing the 4-step style of rock ’n roll. He said the style is popular in France and they wanted to share it with the students of Delft.
The 4-step is typically danced to old style, 50’s rock and roll music. Kleijweg explained that it is an upper body based, partnered dance style that involves one person leading their partner with many spins. “It really is fun,” he said. “It’s easier to pick up than most other dances as you don’t have to focus on two things at the same time, you don’t really have to think about your lower body with most moves.”
Rock ’n Delft hosts a weekly course on Wednesdays for members, which is taught in English. Teachers provide instruction on the basics of the 4-step for the first hour, which is then followed by an hour of free dancing. Beginners can then practice what they have learned and more advanced dancers can practice and learn new moves. This course takes place from 20:00 to 22:00 at Congregatie Delft in the city centre.
The association also hosts regular parties with live bands and other social events, which offer an opportunity to make new friends in addition to dancing. Joining costs 25 euros per semester, and includes the cost of classes. Kleijweg noted that the first lesson is always free so people can try it out before joining. Non-members are welcome to participate in events other than classes for a small fee.
But the Rock ’n Delft website makes it clear that it’s more than just a dance society. “Although we are serious about teaching you how to dance Rock ’n Roll style, our main objective is to share experiences, meet people and enjoy ourselves.” You can find more information on their Facebook page.
