Humans of TU Delft: Emilio Manrique

Who are the people who study and work at TU Delft? We meet them in Humans of TU Delft. With his sombrero and Mexican flag, master’s student Emilio Manrique is geared up to support Mexico in the World Cup. For him, cheering with his compatriots here in Delft is the next best thing to being at home.

“When I’m at home in Mexico of course I love to watch the World Cup with my friends because we all get together and have a great time. But I also have a lot of friends here. It’s different, but it’s also a good experience.

There are so many people here to watch the game against Germany tonight and the atmosphere is great. So for me this is just like being back in Mexico because I’m with all my sisters and brothers watching and cheering together. For me this is something very special.

Our biggest battle is against Germany in the first game so if we can win this one I think our chances are quite good. After the first goal I was so nervous, I couldn’t really think about anything else. But now I want to check in with my friends at home to see what’s going on there.

If Mexico wins, I’m probably going to go with all my friends to the city centre to celebrate and party. I would be really, really happy.”

*Editorial note: This interview was done during halftime of the match between Mexico and Germany. Mexico won 1-0 in the first-round game.
