My knowledge of Dutch was enough to understand that he was homeless and wanted money. Pretty much penniless myself, I quickly devised a cunning plan to get rid of him: I began speaking in English, explaining that I was sorry, but I didn’t understand Dutch. Well…no sooner were these words out of my mouth then this toothless tramp had switched to fluent English and was effortlessly repeating everything he’d just said in Dutch a moment ago! I was stunned. And yes, he got my spare change!
