I love to discover new foods, to discover things I have never tasted before, things that get me curious. I’ll ask myself: ‘How is it made? How does it get this texture? What is that spice?’ Sadly, such moments are quite rare, especially on campus, or at least I thought so.
With its joyful colors and the Surinamese flag waving above it, the ‘I Love SuriFood’ food truck stands like an autumn oddity amidst the leafless trees and concrete buildings of the Mekelpark.
Allan Prosetiko runs the business and judging by the genuine smile he casts from behind the counter you can tell he loves his job. His menu reflects the country’s rich and diverse culinary culture with specialties including sandwiches, baras, roti rolls, bami and nasi. Everything coming out of the truck looks, feels and tastes fresh (maybe even healthy).
As the bami and nasi were not available that day I had a roti roll and a garnished bara. The roti roll was filled with a very tasty blend of spiced potatoes, chickpeas, and chicken. On top, some sprinkled chips and parsley provided extra crunch and color.
My favourite was the garnished bara. A bara is a kind of deep fried dumpling made of dough, urdi beans, Tayer leaves and various spices. The crunchy fritter contrasted perfectly with the very tender soy marinated chicken meat: a perfect treat for that sunny autumn afternoon.
You can make the Surinamese experience complete by adding a can of the typical Fernandes soda to your order. Be aware though that these are very, very sweet.
