Diversity Talks: Inclusion starts with an I

Spirit Day, Paarse Vrijdag in Dutch, is a day on which students wear the colour purple to show solidarity with the LGTBI community. This annual awareness day originates in Canada where it was founded by teenager Brittany McMillan after a rise in bullying-related suicides of gay school students in 2010. In the US and Canada, the tradition has been held on the third Thursday of October since 2013.

In the Netherlands, Spirit Day is held every second Friday of December and is called Paarse Vrijdag. Paars means purple in English and it reflects the purple in the rainbow flag which symbolises spirit.

Diversity Talks

On Spirit Day, Diversity Talks hosted by Studium Generale, DEWIS (Delft Women in Science), True U (LHBT Network), TU Delft Diversity & Inclusion Office, X TU Delft and the TU Delft Feminists, hopes to explore aspects of diversity within the context of science, technology and education.

Inclusion starts with an I, 14th of december at X Theatre Auditorium.

During the event, Dr Hans van Dijk (Tilburg University) will explain why diversity is not only important for science and education, but is important for us all. Following the lecture, Scott Solder will talk about power and the misuse of power and how we can create a pleasant and safe workplace for everyone. In an ‘active bystander training’, he will discuss tools to deal with poor behaviour in your own work environment.



This will be followed by a panel discussion attended by Dr Tanachia Ashikali of Leiden University. Her expertise includes diversity management, leadership and inclusion in public organisations.
