[Food police] Welcome to the family

Every week Delta editors test the food on campus. From the Aula to X and everything in between. This time we go to La Familia in The Fellowship.

Buongiorno! Time for Italian toasties at La Familia. (Photos: Marjolein van der Veldt)

Buongiorno! Our first time at The Fellowship was such a success that we couldn’t wait to go back. Does La Familia also welcome us with open arms?

Restaurant: La Familia (The Fellowship)
Day: Wednesday, 27 March 2019
Time: 12:14
Meals: Vegetarian spianata and meat spianata
Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00

Temperature
Vegetarian and meat (10)
Ouch! We nearly burn our fingers when our spianatas (spianati, spianate?) are served, two minutes out of the powerful little oven. Will our thermometer survive? We measure a steamy 65 degrees. A 10 for both dishes, bravo bravissimo!

VP_LaFamilia_MarjoleinvanderVeldt05.jpgThis colourful spianata scored a 10 for temperature.

Texture
Vegetarian (7)
Spianata means ‘flattened’ and this is exactly what this folded pizza with its lovely thick dough looks like. May we say that? No tomato sauce, instead olive oil on the bottom and then a blob of red pesto, completely melted mozzarella, black olives, red peppers and rucola leaves. We ignore our cutlery and watch while the pesto liquid quietly drips from the spianata.
Meat (7)
Mmm, what is that juicy slice of meat? It makes us greedy and we bite down on the molten mozzarella. The soft mixture of dough, cheese and meat hits our stomach like a rock.

Taste
Vegetarian (6)
We hardly even notice the pepper and rucola. The overriding taste is black olives and melted cheese. These are delicious, but as a vegetarian, we do expect a little more veg.
Meat (8)
This is the ultimate comfort food. We are transported to the sofa where we settle down with a bottle of wine to watch La Grande Bellezza while nonna stuffs us with home-made delicacies.

Quantity/proportion
Vegetarian (7.5)
You could roll us home after that lump of cheesy dough. We can’t bend over! If you’re very hungry, go to this family. Tip: a bit more green please.
Meat (7.5)
After this lunch all we wanted was a siesta. But oddly enough, our editor-in-chief didn’t agree …

VP_LaFamilia_MarjoleinvanderVeldt03.jpgPhew, that was a big meal. Time for a siesta?

Price/quality
Vegetarian (7+)
For EUR 5.15, we had a sizeable evening meal that will last a long while. And it was hot all the way through for a change. Molto bene! Hopefully next time la mamma will be a bit more generous with everything except the olives.
Meat (8)
No snacks during our weekly drinks and postponing dinner until eight in the evening. It goes without saying that you have enough fuel to study / work for the rest of the day.

Presentation
Vegetarian (7)
What can you say about an ungarnished folded piece of dough? Just look at the photo of the unfolded spianata for 10 seconds and take it all in. Basta!
Meat (6.5)
You know that saying, that’s it’s not the outside that counts? In this case, if Giorgio Armani looked at the inside he would chuck this folded creature off the catwalk at once. Oh well, we’ll just keep our eyes closed when we eat.

VP_LaFamilia_MarjoleinvanderVeldt02.jpgIt isn’t pretty, but tastes good! This spianata is more than satisfactory.

Ervaring (7)

Eindoordeel
Vega (7,5)
Vlees (8-)

Scorebord:

  1. Gemista from Maria’s Home Made (9)
  2. Bruschetta with roast salmon from Brothers in the Hood (9-)
  3. Quinoa salad from Brothers in the Hood (8,5)
