Every week Delta editors test the food on campus. From the Aula to X and everything in between. This time we go to Louise Catering & Snacks’ foodtruck Chicken, Curry & Chips.
Last week when we reached Brazilian temperatures we could do little else than to go Mama Louise for a large portion of South American comfort food with an Indian twist.
Restaurant: Louise Catering & Snacks’ foodtruck Chicken, Curry & Chips
Day: Wednesday, 24 April 2019
Time: 12:19
Opening hours: Flexible, as it is a foodtruck
Meal: Yellow rice with chicken Madras (EUR 7.00) & vegetarian roti roll (EUR 5.75).
Music tip: Sergio Mendes – ‘Mas que nada’
Temperature
Yellow rice with chicken Madras (8)
Even hidden behind the foodtrucks the Food Police attracted some stares with the thermometer. But the 60 degrees that it showed just failed to get a standing ovation.
Vegetarian roti roll (7)
At 52 degrees, we could pick it up easily and it was not too tepid.
Here you go, a well-stocked container for only EUR 7!
Texture
Yellow rice with chicken Madras (8)
Traditionally, the rice is boiled in stock and this was evident in the texture. The grains were soft but not sticky. The toothpicks stay in the bag because nothing stuck to our teeth.
Vegetarian roti roll (6.5)
We detect dried tomatoes, potatoes, beans, onions and a tiny little bit of garlic and spices in the roll. Halfway through the meal it turned out to be quite a ‘wet’ filling. The last bit of the roll ended up mushy. Luckily we had picked plenty of serviettes …
Taste
Yellow rice with chicken Madras (9)
Mmmmm, this is truly delicioso! Wouldn’t it be great to have a Brazilian vovó to make a delicious meal like this for us every Sunday.
Vegetarian roti roll (6.5)
Did we want extra chilli, we were asked when we ordered. Yes please, we like a bit of spice. Our taste buds may detect some spices, but a bit more would have been tastier.
We were a bit dissapointed after opening up the veggie roti roll. Just a few greens and no tempeh or tofu.
Quantity/proportion
Yellow rice with chicken Madras (9)
Looking at the quantity of food that was spooned into our container, people probably thought we were hoarding!
Vegetarian roti roll (6.5)
When we open the roll, the quantity was a little disappointing. It would have been fine if we had had a little more vegetables or some marinated tofu. But unfortunately …
Price/quality
Yellow rice with chicken Madras (9)
Salad, lots of rice and even more chicken for a mere EUR 7. We have not yet come across anywhere else on campus where you get so much for ‘so little’.
Vegetarian roti roll (6.5)
A little more vegetables, a little more spice and a less mushy roll would have gained another one-and-a-half points.
Calmly Mama and Papa Louise handle the incoming orders.
Presentation
Yellow rice with chicken Madras (7)
Admittedly, this meal may not be the most beautiful, served in an oversized BigMac container. But it does stay warm.
Vegetarian roti roll (7)
This roti roll looks like a roti roll should. No more, no less.
Experience (7.5)
With a certain calma calma degree of stress, the orders are taken after which the chef again asks from his mobile kitchen what you had ordered. It has a certain charm, but if you like things more organised, you had better go to a Cormet eatery.
