TU Delft celebrates the cream of their crop

Do you have a favourite lecturer? Or a fellow graduate who was always on top of their game? On 26 November staff and students gathered in the Aula for the ‘Best of TU Delft’ award ceremony, celebrating the best lecturers and master’s graduates of the past year.

The title of ‘Best Lecturer of TU Delft’ for 2015 was given to Dr. Alexander in ’t Veld, who will keep the title for a year. Hanan al-Kutubi won the title of ‘Best Graduate of TU Delft’ and her work on metal oxide nanostructures.

TU Delft Rector Karel Luybens opened the ceremony with a few sage words about quality teaching, before making way for the charismatic Dr. David Abbink, who hosted the event with enough cheesy ‘dad-jokes’ to keep the evening light-hearted. Also in attendance were Vice-President for Education and Operations Anka Mulder, COO and Technical Director Lisette Heuer and Chairman of the Delft University fund Michael Wisbrun.

Each of the eight nominated master’s graduates, voted best in their department, presented a short one and a half minute presentation of their master’s project, followed by a short Q & A with Abbink. The nominees form each department were as follows; Tim Visser from LR, Hanan al-Kutubi from TNW, Nadia Remmerswaal from BK, Marcel Mol from CiTG, Vincent Hellendoorn from EWI, Alec Momont from IO, Guido Novati from 3mE, and Tariq Abdul Muhaimin.

Each graduate was presented with 1,000 euro prize and a Delft University Fund Medal in honour of their achievement. The overall winner was decided both on the merit of their thesis, and their short pitch. While every presentation was enthusiastic the student who particularly stood out, and ultimately won the title of ‘Best Graduate of TU Delft’, was Hanan al-Kutubi and her work on metal oxide nanostructures. She took home an additional 1,000 euro prize, a commemorative statuette and a new laptop.

Those voted ‘Best Lecturer’ in each faculty as voted by the student body also each took home 1,000 euros. The lecturers voted best in their department were; Dr. Alexander in ’t Veld from LR, Dr. Fokko van de Bult who is from EWI but teaches in and was nominated by students from TNW. From BK Frits van Loon, Professor Giovanni Bertotti from CiTG, Professor Wouter Serdijn from EWI, Dr. Ianus Keller from IO, Dr. Matthijs Langelaar from 3mE, and Dr. Jan Anne Annema from TBM. Winner Dr. in ’t Veld, also received, in addition to 1,000 euro personal prize, 5,000 euros which will be used to improve teaching.
