Need to study Dutch cooking rituals? Or how drivers use rental cars? There’s an app for that, created right here at TU Delft. Kim Jochemsen, a master’s student in strategic product design, has used the app for research during her studies.

“I used the app in a research for Philips Kitchen Appliances, where we mapped out cooking rituals in Dutch kitchens,” she says. The app uses contextmapping, a qualitative research method, developed at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. It allows respondents to report their experiences real-time and real-place, which, according to Jochemsen, gives a researcher very rich insights into the daily life of a study participant. The data from the surveys can be displayed in comic book-like storyboards, called experience storyboards, for every individual respondent.
