Design ChallengeThe TU Delft Design Challenge offers MSc students from the all faculties an opportunity to show just how innovative they are. This challenging course will start in February 2009 and will offer six assignments that are being sponsored by various companies active in the respective fields.

The application deadline for students interested in enrolling in the course is December 24, 2008. The challenging assignments are wide-ranging and include: Cheaper Solar Cells via New Metallurgic Route, Using African Sand (GiraSolar); Develop New Plastic Plates for Ice Skating (Schreuderssport); New Smart Water Purification Pyramid for Africa (Aqua-Aero Water Systems); Future Portfolio Analysis (Hawe Systems Europe); Develop a New Solar Energy Storage and Fuel System (Dr Ten BV); and Develop Golden Olympic Skate Vancouver (DSB Skate Team). All students with a background in science, engineering, design or management are welcome to join the course.

,Network scientist

Professor Marija Ilic has been hired as the new TU Delft chair in ‘Control of future electricity network operations’. Professor Ilic is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of future electricity networks. The appointment of Professor Ilic is for an initial five-year period. She will also continue in her position as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. TU Delft and Carnegie Mellon University are currently partners in the Next Generation Infrastructures (NGInfra) research program.

,Delft calendar

The Delft Calendar is a new event calendar aimed at promoting all activities that are organized for and by students and staff members of TU Delft. The various activities that students can find on the calendar include career events, cultural events, debates, lectures, parties and more. Students can also place their own activities on the Delft Calendar.
