Motorbikes

18 November, time to go! We were very excited when the plane landed in Hanoi. We took a cab to the university where our Vietnamese friend Cao Đức Hải was waiting for us to arrive.

We dropped the bags in the room and went for a nice welcome lunch together. Afterwards, Hai showed us around in the city and we dropped by the ATM machine to get millions of Dongs!

The following day, it was time for serious business and start-up the project. The project plan for the next coming weeks was made in detail and discussed with the Vietnamese professors. They were very exciting and willing to think with us. However, after lunch, we were surprised when everyone was nicely dressed up, posing for pictures and dancing to the music. We got to the section of Coastal Engineering and were invited to drink some wine with a lot of teachers and students. It turned out, a big party for Teacher’s day was going on. Our first day was a good day!

Since we got here on Thursday, it was already weekend now. Time for some sightseeing in Hanoi: Motorbikes. Motorbikes everywhere…

In every street, at any time, there is a non-stop flow of motorbikes, all carrying multiple people at once and very large objects, such as construction material, beer barrels and living animals. We took a deep breath, looked left and right, and tried to cross the road with a slight hesitation. It’s amazing that it even works..! Whatever you do, do not stop midway and you will see that all the traffic is adapting to you. It may sound strange, but traffic lights are not needed here.
