Blog: Buen progreso

This week we have started to determine suitable elements we could use for the problems we have identified in the city of Cartagena. After being a bit stuck last week we received some very constructive feedback from our supervisors to continue our work.

For the first time in weeks we were able to enjoy some decent bread and other bakeware we haven’t been able to find in Brazil, but she was able to bake for us.

Being the purely technical engineers that we are, our supervisors told us that the solutions we came up with were a bit too technocratic. It was therefore advised to us to extend our stakeholders analysis. After doing this we found that in order for a project to work, a strong appeal to the emotional side of the people needs to be taken, as people in Latin-America have fiery personalities. For our project we now have also taken into account this side of the society.

In trying to determine suitable solutions every part of the city was further divided into smaller areas. Also a separation was made for solutions for coastal protection and drainage, as was identified that both are causing the floods in the streets. For every of this areas the most fitting element was investigated by means of multi criteria analysis. The coming week we will try to combine the elements into a couple of integrated plans for the whole project area.

The strike at the university still continuous. This still seems a bit strange to us, as in the entire university teachers and professors are not allowed to go in. Other than the chairs that are all moved into the square in the middle of the university and the pulsating music at the entrance it does not really pose a problem for us. After the past few weeks most of the students already are familiar with us, so we can enter the university without any problems.

During the week we again invited some of our Colombian friends over at the apartment. During our lunch break they had told us that they were fanatic FIFA players and wanted to challenge us. The game of the evening was of course Netherlands-Colombia, which we won 3-0.
