Every year students are expected to buy new and expensive study books – this initiative can take some of the strain off a tight student budget.
BoekSwap is a non-profit association set up by students, for students. According to their website, “We allow TU Delft university students to buy and sell their second-hand textbooks in one location. It’s easy! You bring us the book, we sell it for you and you make the money. You can also buy your textbooks at BoekSwap. Doing this will save you up to 85% on your book expenses. It’s easy, fast and convenient.” If you have lots of old study books taking up space and gathering dust, this is your solution.
BoekSwap is returning for a third round, and is run this year by Soufian Ahdi and Yassin Essaf. You can hand in your used books to them from June 16th to July 11th 2014, between 11:30 and 13:30, at TU Delft library. You will find their desk set up in the hall beside the stairs as you enter the building. BoekSwap works on a first-come-first-served basis, so the earlier you hand in your books the more likely they will be sold. Book sales begin at the start of the new academic year in September, and you can collect your earnings at the end of September along with any unsold books.
When asked why he became involved Ahdi says, “It’s a great initiative, it’s good for the environment to recycle books in this way, plus it’s nice to be able to give something back to the student body.” He adds, “We really want students to bring as many books as possible and use the system, it can really work out so much cheaper.” Any student that hands in five books or more will automatically become a member, and as such be entitled to a discount on any later purchases with BoekSwap.
For more details and a complete book list see the website, which is in both Dutch and English. This will tell you how much you can get for your old books, and you can also compare the cost of brand new books to BoekSwap prices.
“Our unique selling point is that we not only enable the purchase of second-hand books, but the sale of old ones too. You can do it all in one place. I’m a student, and I know students can be lazy, this makes life easy,” explains Essaf.
