Sometimes life can take an unexpected turn, as Haider Hussain has learned firsthand. Interested in astronomy and space since childhood, he came to TU Delft from India to do a bachelor’s in aero-space.
But after his second year, a chance encounter changed the course of his career path. “I was watching way too many movies,” he said. “It started to get out of hand so I decided I should do something about it.” To channel his budding interest in movies, Hussain began writing scripts for short films. Having never even touched a camera, he started watching tutorials online on filmmaking.
One day while cycling through campus, Hussain saw some people using professional film equipment so he stopped to talk to them. He expressed his interest and, to his surprise, they offered him a job. Now working for Kinetic Vision while he
finishes his degree, Hussain was given the opportunity to learn the trade in a hands-on environment. “It was like Pandora’s box,” he said. Using the equipment at work, Hussain has made several short films, doing everything himself from writing to filming to editing. Initially, he said his ideas came from mimicking other filmmakers he liked. In the future he would like to make films about science fiction, merged with romance, that are contemplative. Hussain is currently working on a feature film that he plans to pitch to production companies. Dissatisfied with the way things are in the world today, Hussain said, “I would like to influence people through film to think about problems and ask questions.”
