Students can also get a massage by a professional. A delegation from Zilveren Kruis Achmea will answer questions about health-insurance. The consultations will take place on Wednesday, 21 November, from 9:00 to 17:00, in Commission room 2 on the second floor of the Aula.
Delft rising
TU Delft has been ranked in 17th place on the list of the ‘Top 50 universities of technology’. TU Delft is the only Dutch university in the Top 50. This university ranking was published by ‘The Times Higher Education Supplement’ (THES). THES is an important worldwide ranking of the 200 best universities in the world. In the general ranking of all universities (non-technological as well), TU Delft was ranked 63rd, marking a significant improvement, as last year TU Delft was ranked 86th.
Grants cut
The TU’s Executive Board will cut back on the financial support provided to the Delftsch Studenten Corps (DSC) student association in the 2008/2009 academic year. This cut involves the guarantee months (‘grants’) for boards with direct responsibility for the smooth running of the introductory period for new members. The measure in question involves a 144-guarantee-month cut in financial support, from a total of 384. This is a response by the Executive Board to verified incidents of unacceptable behavior that were brought to its attention. The incidents in question occurred last September, during the DSC’s introductory period. Enquiries held by TU Delft have revealed that during the DSC’s introductory period several students were subjected to physical abuse and humiliation. This contravenes the guidelines drawn up by the Delft Advisory Committee on Introductory Periods, at the instigation of the student associations themselves and with the approval of TU Delft. The Board considers such behavior entirely unacceptable.
Study costs
Students have to pay too many extra study costs, in addition to their annual tuition fees, according to the Socialist Party (SP) youth organization, Rood (Red). In addition to tuition fees, students spend on average 750 euro for extra study costs, according to the Socialist Party’s survey of 566 students in Dutch higher education. Extra study costs include study trips and additional books. SP parliamentarian Renske Leijten wants universities to tell students exactly how much in extra study costs they should expect to pay.
Design prize
TU Delft architecture student Luuk Stoltenborg has won the South Holland Design Prize in the category of spatial design. He received a prize of 2,500 euro for his design for Delft Central Station. Stoltenborg said his design was to serve as “permanent place to stay that includes a hotel, restaurants and waiting rooms”, instead of merely being a “stop” between Rotterdam and Den Haag.
Web guide
A lecturers’ web guide has been set up for all TU Delft lecturers, with comprehensive information on important education-related processes and procedures. TU Delft lecturers are inevitably confronted with myriad rules and procedures from the supporting organization, such as those for module descriptions and submitting examination results. All this information is now gathered in one place: the lecturers’ web guide. The web guide concisely covers the processes and procedures and also serves as a home page (or portal), with a collection of useful links.
Five-thousandth
On Tuesday, November 6, Jana Tatur became the five-thousandth student to receive a doctoral degree from TU Delft. The Ukrainian student and her professors were not informed beforehand of this fact. Tatur was therefore surprised when during the course of her doctoral presentation she received a bouquet of flowers from TU Delft’s Rector Jacob Fokkema.
