Arnoud Greidanus wordt TU-alumnus van het jaar

 

Volgens de jury weet Greidanus ‘op indrukwekkende wijze’ de roeisport op topniveau te combineren met zijn onderzoek. Op het WK roeien in Bled bereikte Greidanus vorige maand de finale van de ‘Lichte Twee’. Zijn ‘bevlogenheid, sportieve prestaties en innovatief toepassingsgericht onderzoek’ waren de motivatie van de jury om deze titel toe te kennen.

Prijs

Aan de titel ‘Alumnus van het jaar’ is een persoonlijke prijs van tweeëneenhalf duizend euro verbonden en een sculptuur van Prometheus, het symbool van de TU Delft. Ook mag Greidanus 7.500 euro bestemmen aan onderzoek bij de TU Delft. Hij koos daarvoor onderzoek en innovatie in de watersport.

Roeisport

Als roeier met Olympische A-status presteert Greidanus al jaren op het hoogste niveau en streeft hij zijn droom na: goud tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Londen. De vermoedelijke oorzaak van de verloren halve finale van de `HollandVier` tijdens de Spelen in Peking inspireerde Greidanus voor zijn promotieonderzoek aan de TU Delft: een stukje wier dat aan de boot bleef plakken prikkelde hem om op zoek te gaan naar ander materiaal of coating die de wrijving tussen roeiboot en het water zo laag mogelijk maakt. Vooral de roeiers van de Olympische spelen in Rio de Janeiro zullen de vruchten van zijn onderzoek kunnen plukken, maar ook voor de scheepvaart en luchtvaart kan dit onderzoek naar nieuwe coatings tot snellere boten, minder weerstand of lagere risico’s leiden.

Jury

Unaniem kwam de jury tot de conclusie dat Greidanus de titel verdient vanwege ‘zijn bevlogenheid, sportieve prestaties en innovatief toepassingsgericht onderzoek’. Zij verwacht dat zowel het onderwerp van zijn promotieonderzoek als zijn gedrevenheid veel alumni van de TU Delft tot de verbeelding zullen spreken. De jury bestaat uit de leden van de commissie van toezicht van het vriendenfonds: ir. N. Maas (voorzitter), prof. dr. ir. J. Fokkema en ir. J. Bronsing.

Trots op alumni

De titel ‘Alumnus van het Jaar’ wordt toegekend door het vriendenfonds van het Universiteitsfonds Delft (UfD). Het fonds heeft deze titel in het leven geroepen ‘om uit te dragen dat de TU Delft trots is op haar alumni én om alumni die een inspiratiebron voor anderen zijn of een bijzondere bijdrage hebben geleverd aan technologie, innovatie, wetenschap of ondernemerschap in het zonnetje te zetten’.

Advanced grant
Professor Henny Zandbergen has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for his research into improved microscopic technologies. The technologies enable Professor Zandbergen to visualise extremely small structures, such as semiconductor nanowires, all the way down to atomic level, and also measure them. The ERC Advanced Grant is awarded by the European Union to scientists of exceptional professional standing.

Veni grants
Five young and talented TU Delft researchers have been awarded Veni grants from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. The Veni grants – which are worth a maximum of €250,000 per researcher – will allow the researchers to spend the next three years developing ideas and conducting research. The grant winner are: Dr Akira Endo, whose work will focus on developing a huge network of superconductive, far infrared detectors for the purpose of studying star formation; Dr Caspar Chorus, whose work will focus on preventing regret in mobility decisions; Dr Ali Mesbah, who will develop an automated testing procedure for web applications; Dr Rudy Negenborn, whose continuing research on coordinated transport hubs should lead to better coordinated and more efficient transport management systems; and Dr Mohanchand Paladugu, whose  project will study methods for developing a new form of self-repairing steel.

Learning Centre
Under the slogan, ‘Educate – Innovate – Create’, TU Delft will officially open its new Library Learning Centre on 18 November, at 15:00 (Prometheusplein 1). After two years of planning, renovating and refurbishing, TU Delft Library has been transformed into a Library Learning Centre, where teachers have access to innovative teaching facilities in multifunctional classrooms, and students can work together on multidisciplinary, up-to-date business projects. Pay back
Dutch Education State Secretary, Halbe Zijlstra, has requested that TU Delft’s president, Dirk Jan van den Berg, repay the government 19,000 euros, because, according to the pay scale set for Dutch public sector employee salaries, President Van den Berg’s salary for 2009 exceeded the imposed limits. President Van den Berg’s salary for 2009 was 200,000 euros, excluding pension contributions.

Lights on
With the shorter winter days upon us, and in order to avoid paying fines, it’s time for students to turn their bike lights on during the dark morning and evening commutes to and from university. To encourage this, Delft municipality has organized a week-long event called ‘Led on’, aimed at reminding local cyclists to start using their bike lights. On Friday, November 12, at 19:00, Delft alderman Milène Junius will help promote this event at the Vesteplein, where students can also buy led bike lights at discount prices.

Observation
TU Delft’s teachers now have the opportunity to have their lectures filmed and then receive tips for improving their teaching styles. Focus Education Centre is offering TU Delft instructors a course titled, ‘An (even) better teacher through observation and feedback’. Participants are taught about the importance of posture, lesson structure and vocal projection, while also observing their colleagues during their lectures. Teachers often find direct feedback the most instructive learning method.
