The TU plays a major role in the OPBC as the representative of the BE-Basic research programme, which covers a wide range of topics: sustainable plantation and harvest, logistics & biorefining, biochemical conversion, nutrient recycling, soil and water quality and energy and CO2 integration.

Motor racing

The Novabike student racing team will compete at the Supermono Open Championship in Assen on Monday 9 April. The driver is the former Grand Prix competitor Hugo van den Berg. The racing engine was designed, calculated and built by the TU’s student team. Team manager Yoeri Torel stresses the use of second generation bio-ethanol as fuel, made from waste by means of fermentation. This results in half the CO2 exhaust compared to the competitors.

Silent wall

The innovative Danish acoustic wall, Distortion II, will be presented at the first Materia Xpert Series in Amsterdam on 5 April. Creative director Els Zijlstra, from Materia, is proud to present the silent wall, because “materials are getting ever smoother and harder, which encourages architects to look for materials that filter and absorb sound.” TU Delft’s Reinier Jansen (IDE) will demonstrate sound properties of products.

School at sea

To better understand the influence of clouds on climate, remote sensing expert, Professor Herman Russchenberg (EEMCS faculty), has called in the help of Dutch schoolchildren who are undertaking a six-month sailing trip to the Caribbean within the framework of the educational programme, ‘School at Sea’, which was started last year. During their trip, the students are measuring factors like wind, water temperature and air humidity, and also estimate the cloud cover. “The first data are now pouring in, and seem very useful,” says Russchenberg.

Strong fields

Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory (US) have produced magnetic fields in excess of 100 tesla, which is roughly the equivalent to 2 million times the Earth’s magnetic field. There are higher magnetic fields produced elsewhere, but the magnets that create such fields blew themselves to bits in the process. Instead, the system at Los Alamos is designed to work non-destructively. With this technology, the researchers aim to study new forms of magnetic ordering in magnetic materials.

Tja, echt sexy kun je het niet maken, een paasfeest. Geen glitters, geen goud, geen sterretjes. Gelukkig is ‘op je paasbest’ een rekbaar begrip en dat geldt ook voor paasfeestjes. Op de vrijdag voor Pasen houdt het Floratheater onder de titel ‘Paas Best’ daarom gewoon een jazzparty. In de line-up staan maar liefst drie fijne namen: jazzformatie Monsieur Dubois, het dj-collectief Rundfunk en dj Onno Paloma. Geen kleintjes in Delft, al is het maar omdat de dj’s van Rundfunk onder de naam Echte Boter al jarenlang vaste clubavonden verzorgen; eerst in Speakers en nu in Ciccionina. Ze ‘weten als geen ander hun funk en jazz zo te verpakken dat zelfs de meest doffe muurbloem zich ontsluit en de dansvloer voor lief neemt’, vinden ze zelf. In de praktijk spelen ze gewoon een lekkere mix van funk, rock, soul, jazz en alles wat verder voorhanden is.

Monsieur Dubois bracht onlangs zijn derde cd uit: ‘Slow Bombastik’. Nóg meer hardjazz na de platen ‘Ruff’ en ‘Soul Integration’, waarmee de zes mannen nu door het land toeren. Spaar je krachten, is het advies, want eenmaal bij hun draaitafels is het volgens de dj’s ‘alsof je vanuit een zweterige discotheek wordt meegesleurd naar de drukke binnenstad van Lagos en vervolgens na het zien van een Blaxploitation-movie wordt gedropt op de Russische steppe.’

Tja. Gelukkig maar dat dj Onno Paloma de avond dan lekker dansbaar afsluit met alle stijlen door elkaar, zoals hij al jaren doet bij het North Sea Jazz Festival en in het Rotterdams Lantaren-Venster. Nét op tijd voordat het echte paasfeest begint, en je lekker fris aan de paasstol kunt verschijnen bij je ouders.
