Meet the Society: Student rugby clubs

If you thought playing rugby was only for big, burly men then think again. There are three rugby clubs at TU Delft that welcome men and women of all shapes and sizes, from beg

Rugby is known to be an intensely physical sport, but with the right training anyone can learn techniques that will get you on the pitch, in a scrum or maybe even scoring a try.

Delft Student Rugby Club (DSR-C)

Founded in 1918, the DSR-C is the oldest and most traditional rugby club in the Netherlands. Their first team plays in the top division in the Netherlands and has placed second two years in a row. But club president Kris Franken, who is studying maritime engineering, said that about 75% of new players are inexperienced. “Don’t hesitate,” he stated. “Attend a training and you’ll be sold in under a minute.” DSR-C is affiliated with the Delftsch Studenten Corps (student union) and combines rugby with plenty of social activities. See their website for more information.

Sanctus Virgilius Rugby Club (SVRC)

The youngest of the three TU Delft rugby clubs, SVRC was founded in 2007 by some enthusiastic members of Sanctus Virgilius, a Catholic student society. All players on the team are members of Virgilius. Although they normally train on the sports field at Sport & Culture, during the summer members of SVRC can often be found training at Scheveningen beach. And as part of such a large student association they participate in frequent social events. See their website for more information.

Thor

Student Rugby Club Thor was founded in 1963 and is the only club at TU Delft that it is not affiliated with another student association. Members of Thor work hard on the pitch, but they also enjoy socializing together off the pitch. Every Tuesday after training they head down to The Forward, an old boat that has been transformed into their clubhouse. Thor also rents the boat out for parties to non-members. You can get more information from their website.

Training sessions for all clubs are held twice weekly and most league matches are played on Sundays. In order to participate with any of the teams you will need sports clothing, shoes for playing on turf and a mouth guard. Sport & Culture has a team of experienced trainers that works with the clubs on a regular basis. For more information on how to join visit the Sports & Culture website.
