Majority for three-year higher basic grant

A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives wants the temporary increase in the basic grant for students living away from home to apply not for one but three academic years. They support a proposal by the Dutch political parties D66, CDA and ChristenUnie to this effect.

In view of skyrocketing inflation, minister Dijkgraaf proposed this autumn that the new basic grant for students living away from home should be increased by 165 euros a month next academic year.

A good idea, ChristenUnie, D66 and CDA think, but according to them, there are good arguments for granting students living away from home a higher grant for three years. The cost could be paid from funds freed up when the halving of tuition fees is stopped.

President Terri van der Velden of the Interstedelijk Studenten Overleg is happy with the extension, although not all concerns have been addressed: “For students without a basic grant, this is sour. However, we also want to look forward and emphasise that this will help a large group.” (HOP, HC)
