“When I started at TU Delft I was a little overwhelmed by the speed of things in the master’s programme. Coming from a much smaller university in London, we had a programme that was based on a full year and naturally much slower in progression.
For me, design grows and develops slowly. I often take a long time initially to get anything onto paper. I think that I put a lot of weight and importance on the concept idea. If the concept works and is backed up well, usually everything else falls into place naturally.
‘Eventually it all came together’
That was the case with my graduation project. I was off to a very slow start after spending a month in Indonesia on a ‘social/cultural’ investigation as I like to call it and even ran off in a direction that proved rather useless for a while. But eventually it all came together. That is in large part due to my very patient and supportive tutors. They were brilliant in understanding the different needs of students as individuals, something that I find quite rare in teaching.
The programmatic idea of appropriate waste management and making use of the raw materials available is something that is very important to me. Early next year my graduation project will be exhibited as part of the national Archiprix competition. Being able to fine tune your graduation project is quite exciting, but also just as nerve racking as the initial graduation itself. But it gives me a lovely opportunity to come back to Delft and catch up with fellow students and old professors and is a good break from daily office life.”
