A team of international students helped provide valuable feedback to the university.
“Want to earn some extra money while getting involved a real project?” That was the tantalizing question posed on a flyer distributed during last year’s international student Introduction Week.
The flyer, distributed by the university’s Marketing & Communication (M&C) department, aimed to assemble a team of students that would meet monthly and brainstorm about ideas for possible changes to aspects of the university.
The project, called ‘First Impressions’, was led by M&C’s Karen Smid. Six international students – from India, China, South Africa and Columbia – answered the call and formed a project team. The team then attended monthly meetings with Smid that focused on particular topics thought to crucial to enhancing and simplifying the international student experience, with a particular focus on making the wealth of information available throughout TU Delft more easily accessible and organized.
TU Delft’s new webpage, which went online a few months ago, was partly influenced by the project team’s suggestions. Team members were asked to submit examples of other university’s websites they found more interactive and easy to browse around than TU Delft’s.
Gaurav Genani, an MSc industrial design student, found Stanford’s website easier to navigate regarding applications for master/graduate programs. Gina Qing, MSc in architecture, thought University College London’s separate colour columns for different subjects visually appealing and easier for identifying desired topics. The team also suggested that TU Delft’s website search engine wasn’t powerful enough and gave unwanted results. Imperial College London’s website, powered by a Google search engine, was regarded as superior.
Another welcoming initiative stemming from the project team was the incorporation of a ‘Wall of Fame’ on TU Delft’s website. The ‘Wall of Fame’ aims to motivate students by profiling other students who have achieved excellence academically and in other endeavors, like sports, student projects, business competitions, etc. A final suggestion from the project team was that TU Delft should hold a grand graduation ceremony in the Aula, with students and professors dressed in formal robes, as is the case with graduation ceremonies at other leading universities worldwide. While no promises on this were made, Smid plans to take the issue to the authorities concerned.

Voor de bieb diept een jongen een groen hoedje met een rode rand op uit een tas. Er staat een ‘heer’ met een lange jas, overhemd en stropdas– Roekaerts naar later blijkt. Er komen wat attributen te voorschijn. Een speelgoed pijl-en-boogje, chocolade dukaten, een bordje ‘CvB Voorzitter’, een bordje Robin Student. En flyers. Natuurlijk. Er moet een wettelijke salarisnorm komen in het onderwijs, staat er op.
12.32 uur.
Robin Student en de CvB Voorzitter lopen een beetje weg bij de ingang. Als ze weer richting bieb gaan, valt Robin met zijn boog vooruit de CvB Voorzitter aan. Net verstaanbaar vraagt hij geld omdat dat van de studenten is. Een geslaagde overval: wel dukaten, geen getuigen. De drie rokers bij de ingang keken nauwelijks op, de Lorre-flyereraars is alles ontgaan. Robin en de Voorzitter maken een praatje met de lui van Lorre en leggen hun actie uit.
12.34 uur.
“We gaan het binnen nog een keer doen”, kondigt Roekaerts aan. Meteen na de binnenkomst slaan Robin en de Voorzitter rechtsaf de ruimte in waar automaten met versnaperingen en studenten staan. Een nieuwe overval. Nauwelijks vertoon, weinig geluid, geen spektakel. Een handjevol pauzerende studenten kijken op met een blik van ‘wat is dit nou?’. Binnen blokken honderden studenten onverstoorbaar door. Het is tentamentijd en dat vereist een gedegen voorbereiding. Misschien iets voor de volgende opvoering van ‘toneelvereniging’ Rood.
