Expulsion of medical student was justified

 

 

A medical student at Erasmus University Rotterdam was rightly expelled from the study programme when she proved unsuitable for the profession during her internships. This is stated in a ruling by the Council of State.

 

The student started studying medicine in 2007 and obtained her bachelor’s degree in 2014. That same year, she started the master’s programme, in which medical students do ‘coschairs’. Her first coship was terminated prematurely. There was allegedly “grossly unprofessional behaviour” that disrupted mutual communication and even threatened patient care. She entered treatment with a psychiatrist to see how she could deal with her “underlying hurt feelings and indignant attitude”.

 

But things did not work out, even though she continued her studies and had now entered the final phase of her degree. She only needed to pass the final coship of the course.

 

As of 1 May 2022, the student was deregistered from the medical programme. The student opposed that decision, but the administrative law department of the Council of State ruled in favour of the programme. It is the fourth time since 2010 that a medical student has been expelled from the programme. (HOP, BB)
