Erasmus University reoccupied

Climate activists have been occupying an Erasmus University building again since Tuesday morning. They want the administration to cut ties with the fossil industry immediately. In November, the same action group also occupied a university building.

On Monday, Erasmus University Rotterdam acknowledged that the world is in a climate emergency, as activists from climate movement OccupyEUR demanded at an earlier occupation. The administration plans to work towards greener policies in the coming years.

For instance, soon only vegetarian food will be available on campus and all students will receive education on sustainability. More importantly, the university wants to reconsider its ties with polluting companies and “engage in dialogue” about them.

But the activists want action. “We are certainly not against the university’s statement, but it is far from enough,” one of them told Erasmus Magazine when asked. Some 60 of them have been occupying the university building that houses the administration, among others, since Tuesday morning. They turned down a meeting with the administration yesterday. Although it was forbidden by the university’s demonstration rules, they have spent the night there in tents. (HOP, PvT)
