Celebrating With Colour

At the onset of spring, Mother Nature isn’t the only one with bright colours. The Indian Student Association is hosting a Holi celebration.


Holi, the festival of colour, is a holiday which celebrates renewal and the beginning of spring. Traditionally a Hindu festival, it is celebrated across India by people of religious backgrounds. The holiday is so much fun that it has spread beyond its Hindu origins.

The festival is typically spread out over two days, Choti Holi (the day before) and Holi (the main day.) Holi is celebrated with people splashing colours at one another. The colour can be in any form, powdered colour, coloured water and, in some streets of India, even washable paint. Every part of India has unique Holi traditions, and in some parts the festival kicks off with a huge bonfire the night before.

There are also special dishes associated with the festival. In North India, the Holi must-have delicacy is a mithai called Gujia, while in Maharashtra, the popular dish is Puran Poli. Sujaya Shinde, External Affairs Commissioner of the Indian Student Association (ISA), says “my favourite part about Holi is a special sweet dish called Puran Poli.” Puran Poli is a sweetened flatbread made with dal.

To have the opportunity to celebrate as well as share the holiday with their classmates, ISA hosts a Holi celebration every year at TU Delft. In 2013, Holi was celebrated on March 27th. However, due to the exam schedule at TU Delft as well as the cold weather, the ISA opted to move the celebration to later in the year.

This year, the event will take place on April 21st from 12:00 until 16:00 in Mekel Park (opposite of the Cultural Center.) Tickets are €2 and include a bottle of coloured powder and a discount on food. A DJ will be playing the latest Bollywood tunes and variety of Indian food will be available for purchase.

As is tradition, attendees are likely to get messy so don’t wear anything that can’t be improved with a bit of colour.
