TU Delft student to advise United Nations

Delft physics bachelor student Fenna Timsi (21) has been elected youth human rights and security representative. Over the next two years, she will gather young people’s ideas and opinions and offer them to policymakers, such as those of the United Nations General Assembly.

In an interview in Delta last week, Timsi said she has always had a strong sense of justice. “I’m half Algerian and half Dutch and I think because of this biculturality I always had to switch perspectives. Because you live in two different worlds, I think you can really see who is being left out of those worlds.”

Timsi said she plans to mobilise as many young people as possible to face huge challenges like climate change, rising inequality, the energy transition and war. “We, the youth, will face the burdens, so we must have a say in finding solutions.”

Timsi was elected during an event in Amsterdam. With her, three more youth representatives were elected: Shareena Obispo on European affairs, Ida Simonsen on biodiversity and food and Kiki Ritmeijer on sustainable development. Another TU Delft student was also in the running for the latter position, but this Julia Rozenberg did not make it. (SB)
