TU Library under maintenance

A spectacular scaffolding around the TU Library’s cone heralds the beginning of extensive maintenance work during the summer. What more can you expect?

The scaffolding will be used by painters to apply a new coating on the library’s iconic cone that towers forty-one metres above the ground. The steel pipes and the steel pillars that support the roof along the Schoemakerstraat need to be repainted every ten years. The pillars will be painted to the foundation level.

After the steel pipes are finished, the concrete part of the cone will be painted as well, calling for more scaffolding on the roof. The painting work will be finished at the end of July.

Next, the glass windows around the cone will be replaced. Some of them have cracked due to minor subsidence. This is the first time the glass will be replaced, and because the hall below will have to be closed during the work, this part of the maintenance has been planned for the quiet period of August.

Another radical change will be the replacement of the heavy steel doors at the main entrance by automatic sliding doors. Part of the entrance will remain accessible during this work.

The TU Delft Library maintains a Facebook page with regular updates on the summer maintenance.
