University hospitals want larger share of education and research funds

Dutch university hospitals hope that Minister Dijkgraaf will reverse the shift of education and research funds to the universities of technology and science faculties. The Dutch Federation of University Medical Centres (NFU) responds (in Dutch) to Minister Dijkgraaf’s ‘outline letter’ on higher education and science. He reported nothing about the shifted ‘Van Rijn funds’ – named after the committee that advised on this – in the letter. The previous cabinet shifted money ‘quick and dirty’ to the exact and technical sciences, because they would get in trouble due to the increasing student population and threatened with student freezes. The decision to shift funds was made at the expense of alpha, gamma and medical studies. Now that the government is going to spend more money on science, this redistribution can be reversed, the NFU argues. (HOP, HC)
