TU Delft students not abroad for the time being

Following an exchange programme or a minor abroad this year? Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the plans of hundreds of TU Delft students are on hold for the time being. They are forced to cancel or postpone their trip and will need continue their studies in Delft.

Is the university prepared for this, are there enough places in the minor available, and did the university not communicate sooner about postponing and cancelling trips abroad? During their monthly meeting, student council members subjected vice rector Rob Mudde to a barrage of questions.

According to Mudde, there are enough places available in the minor, although not every student will be admitted to the minor of his or her choice. In addition, he acknowledged that communication could have been better. “Even though we warned students in March not to make plans to go abroad for the upcoming academic year.” He finds it frustrating that students cannot gain experience abroad now, but finds the risk of sending students to ‘yellow or orange areas’ too significant.

When asked whether an online exchange is an option, he responded negatively. “The cultural aspect plays such an important role, it’s a shame if students miss out on that experience. I also wonder if our students would be interested in this.”
