Imagine a month-long, worldwide celebration right here in Delft with crazy orange outfits, screaming crowds, overflowing patriotism and lots and lots of beer.
That’s how it was across Delft during the Football World cup in 2014. Read through to get a sense of the excitement and special arrangements made in the city at the time. With the EuroCup around the corner, this is handy information to have. that took place. Sadly, this information was of no use when the Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016. We’re optimistic about 2018 though.
Sports en Cultuur, TU Delft
If you want to follow FIFA 2014 with a big crowd of screaming fans, just head to the Sports and Culture centre. They’ve got a whole lot of fun activities being planned. They’re even bringing you a slice of the host country. “We’ll try and create a Copacabana corner, an area where you can chill, get a drink and a meal with a live DJ playing on some nights,” said Remco van der Velden of the Events Department of Sports en Cultuur. While they’re still planning the details, there are likely to be on-site games, workshops and maybe even a quiz or two. “During the previous World Cup, on a night when Holland was playing there were about 700 people here, when other countries play it goes down to about 200,” added Van Der Velden.

While this particular pub is synonymous with darts and quizzes, it’s also a favourite venue for locals looking to watch football. Every major tournament is screened here and the venue has multiple screens for simultaneous matches. “Since 1997 we have been showing the World Cup and European games live on multiple screens,” said Edwin van Schijndel, the owner, adding, “We will remain open for the late kick-offs.” If you’re planning to head here you might want to brush up on your football trivia. On the last Thursday of every month, the pub hosts a pub quiz and when football fever is in the air, the quiz takes on a special theme.

Hup hup Holland!
To get into the Oranje spirit, be sure to listen to Hup Holland Hup, a Dutch football song written in 1950. Local fans say it’s something you’ll need to chant every time the Dutch team is on. Another song you might hear a lot is Viva Hollandia by Wolter Kroes and the 2008 Euro Cup song.
