Scientist Rebellion blindfolded statues

Scientist Rebellion blindfolded statues

Scientist Rebellion climate campaigners blindfolded the statues of Erasmus in Rotterdam, Spinoza in Amsterdam and Rembrandt in Leiden, this weekend. At least eight statues in the Netherlands were reportedly involved.

The action was carried out not only in the Netherlands, but also in Denmark and Ireland, among others. Banners and images of alarming graphs from the report of the international climate organisation IPCC were hung on the statues. The message: with further global warming, ecosystems will change irrevocably and will quickly become unlivable. (read further below photo)

That message still gets too little hearing, believes Spencer Heijnen, Scientist Rebellion campaigner and psychology lecturer at the University of Amsterdam. “If our world leaders ever hope to earn a statue they must radically change course now and do what is necessary to stop greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. They must not look away!”

This weekend, Scientist Rebellion was also present at a climate protest at Eindhoven Airport, in protest against high emissions from private jets. More actions will follow over the next three weeks. (HOP, PvT)
