Run on reintroduced basic grant

Almost 442 thousand students have now applied for the new basic grant. That is almost seven thousand more than expected, while applications are still open. The previously expected number of 435 thousand was only a forecast, says the DUO spokesperson. It was based on applications in previous years and a calculation of the number of students who would still be entitled to a basic grant. It is possible that students who did not do so in previous years are applying for student grants, because before student finance was a loan.

Reintroduced

As of September 2015, the student basic grant was not available anymore. Now it is returning for incoming freshmen and and senior students. These senior students are entitled to it as long as they have not yet used up their ‘performance grant’. In practice, you get the performance grant for the number of years of study.

Some students have stopped their loans to reapply for it now that the basic grant is there, so that they are entitled to the basic grant for longer. It is not yet known how many students did so.

The basic grant for students living at home will be 110 euros per month next year. For students living on their own, it is 439 euros per month (including a temporary increase of 164 euros due to high inflation). (HOP, BB)
