‘Review strike’ at Oxford

University lecturers in the United Kingdom have stopped reviewing work to force better working conditions. They acknowledge that some students may be delayed as a result.

The British union University and College Union, which represents 70 thousand staff at 145 institutions, called on its members on April 20 to stop marking students’ exams. This is being heeded, including at the prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

The union realizes that some students may be delayed or even unable to graduate because of the actions. But there is nothing else that can be done, a spokesman tells The Financial Times. According to him, it is the only way to force better working conditions for faculty and university staff.

According to figures from Britain’s Office for National Statistics, wages and working conditions at British universities lag behind the national average. Last fall, there was another major strike. (HOP, PvT)
