The Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office wants to send a clear message to students about the importance of mutual consent in sexual relations. It is demanding a 20-month prison sentence for a member of the Utrecht Student Corps.

After a dinner date, the suspect allegedly raped a member of the Utrecht women’s association UVSV in his room. She reportedly suffered bruises, which the USC student was unable to explain to the judge on Tuesday, according to a report on the hearing in the Dutch newspaper NRC (link in Dutch).
Signal
The woman wanted to stay the night with the USC member, but said she had made it clear that she did not want to have sex. The USC member ignored this. She eventually got away from him by saying she had to take life-saving medication.
The Public Prosecution Service is taking the case seriously. On Tuesday, the student was sentenced to 20 months in prison, six months of which were suspended. “The suspect and society, including student life, must receive a clear signal that sexual contact requires mutual consent and that coercion is therefore absolutely unacceptable and punishable,” said the public prosecutor during the hearing.
Banga list
The Utrecht student corps has been under fire for some time. For example, its members are no longer welcome as lifeguards on Texel due to sexually transgressive behavior. Last year, a prominent member of the corps was sentenced to three years in prison for the rape of three female students.
The Utrecht fraternity’s ‘bangalijst’ also caused quite a stir at the beginning of last year. In July, the Public Prosecution Service announced that it was prosecuting four USC members for distributing it. The USC says it has initiated a cultural change.
