‘Provide clarity to students from Ukraine’
The universities and universities of applied sciences are receiving many signals from refugee students from Ukraine who want to study at a Dutch institution in September. If they receive a temporary residence permit, as the Dutch Lower House requested in a motion (in Dutch), they will no longer have to pay the sky-high institutional tuition fees of thousands of euros and will also be eligible for student grants.
But as long as the decision about this has not been made, the refugees do not know whether they will be able to pay for a study in the Netherlands, says a letter (in Dutch) that the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF, together with the universities and universities of applied sciences, has sent to Minister Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture and Science and State Secretary Van den Burg of Justice and Security. “It is therefore important that a decision is taken very soon about the provisions that arise from the status”, they write. “Excessive costs should never be a barrier for refugee students to continue their studies.”
In March, the Dutch government already made €1 million available for emergency support for current students and staff at Dutch institutes of higher education, and another €2.3 million in early April. (HOP, HC)
