Professor Serge Hoogendoorn to become KNAW member

Next September, Serge Hoogendoorn and 22 others will join as members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. According to the KNAW, Hoogendoorn will have this honorary position as the first transport scientist. Hoogendoorn is professor of smart urban mobility at TU Delft. He analyses the individual and collective behaviour of cyclists, pedestrians and drivers of motorised vehicles in order to avoid crowding and congestion. His work has included contributing to control systems on motorways. Together with his wife Sascha Hoogendoorn-Lanser, he also visualises traffic flows on the TU campus in order to achieve better distribution. According to the KNAW, Hoogendoorn’s young age – he is not yet fifty – ‘has a distinctive profile and a track record of publications, citations and research grants comparable to those of considerably older scientists’.
