Sports coaches are alleged to have recommended young people as ‘talented athletes’ in return for payment, while they were not talented athletes.
The suspects – coaches, examiners and parents – are suspected of a range of misdemeanours including fraud, conspiracy and taking part in organised crime, report various American media channels. Among the universities affected by the scandal are Yale University, the University of Southern California, Stanford University and Georgetown University
The parents, who include the actresses Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) and Lori Loughlin (Full House), are said to have paid about USD 25 million between 2011 and 2019 to ensure that their children had a place at university. Sports coaches are said to have made sure that the children were registered as sports students. Talented sportspeople have a better chance of admittance to universities in the United States.
