SkunkResearchers at University College London have discovered that one of Holland’s most famous products, ‘skunk’ cannabis, causes more-severe memory loss than other cannabis strains.
Cannabis contains two chemicals: Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary active ingredient responsible for the classic ‘high’ effect, including euphoria, giddiness, anxiety and paranoia; and cannabidiol, a chemical with more calming effects that brain-imaging studies show can also block THC’s psychosis-inducing effects. Owing to aggressive plant breeding in recent decades, skunk varieties now contain severely elevated THC levels, leading to mild-to-severe cognitive impairment in young users and possibly higher incidences of psychotic conditions, such as schizophrenia. Researchers suspect the harmful effects of the drug on mental health stem from the increased ratio of THC to cannabidiol in cannabis, because cannabidiol levels have not kept pace with rising THC concentrations. The research findings are published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
3TU
Starting in 2011, the 3TUs (TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and TU Twente) will receive 11 million euro in government funding. This will allow the 3TUs to develop its strategic plan, said TU Delft president, Dirk Jan van den Berg: “If there is funding leftover, then there will perhaps be scope for new ideas.” The three Dutch technological universities established their 3TU joint venture in 2007 and collaborate in areas including education, research and knowledge valorisation.
IBM
TU Delft and IBM are jointly researching how technology and analytics can be applied to complex water systems to minimise flood risks. Insights into complex water systems are central to flood prevention and water conservation. The research results will impact the Dutch water system as well other regions with similar complex water systems, like the Sacramento River Delta in the US, the South-North Water Transfer Project in China, and reservoir management in the Alps.
Welgeteld 9.751 hbo-bachelors stonden afgelopen jaar bij twee of zelfs drie studies tegelijk ingeschreven, meldt het ministerie van OCW in antwoord op vragen van de Tweede Kamer over de onderwijsbegroting. Onduidelijk is of de hbo’ers een extra hbo-opleiding volgen of een universitaire opleiding.
Het klinkt indrukwekkend, maar eigenlijk zijn het geen grote getallen. Het is maar een fractie (2,5 procent) van het totale aantal hbo-studenten dat vorig jaar stond ingeschreven: in totaal bijna 384 duizend.
In totaal zijn bijna 23 duizend hbo’er en wo’ers samen goed voor ruim 47 duizend inschrijvingen in het hoger onderwijs. Van die inschrijvingen zijn er 23.903 in de wo-bachelor en 13.240 in de wo-master.
Met andere woorden, maar liefst zeventien procent van de 219 duizend universitaire inschrijvingen komt voor rekening van dubbelstudenten. Daar vallen ook de hbo’ers onder die hun eerste studiejaar hebben gehaald en er dan een wo-bachelor naast volgen.
Kamerleden vroegen ernaar, omdat minister Plasterk in de toekomst nog maar één bachelor en één master wil vergoeden. Het is een omstreden maatregel uit de nieuwe wet. De Eerste Kamer dubt erover en belangenbehartigers van studenten doen hun best om de wet via de senaat alsnog te wijzigen.
