Fire spreads too easily – Scanty answers on departure board – Less sport facilities feared Fire spreads too easilySeven million guilders have been reserved for fire prevention in the Electrical Engineering building.

In the coming weeks a building contractor will start improving fire safety in the high-rise building. After the disaster in Volemdam, the local fire brigade urged the TU to implement plans for improved fire safety as soon as possible and threatened to partially close the building otherwise. Next year, the executive board must decide on major fire safety measures for the Architecture building. Other TU-buildings only require minor adjustments.

Scanty answers on departure board

The supervisory board has spoken to Loek Hermans in %rough phrases% concerning the situation at TU Delft. Hermans, the Dutch Minister of Education, said they didn’t discuss the executive board’s dismissal. Hermans was responding to questions raised by a member of the Lower House. ,,I assume the supervisory board has taken its decision after thorough consideration and on good grounds,” Hermans declares. Furthermore, he states it’s common practice to appoint board members to two terms of four years.

Less sport facilities feared

In the TU master-plan, far too little space is reserved for sports fields, the Delft Student Sport Federation (Dssf) argues. The four fields behind the Architecture building will disappear, they say. Although more space will be made available near the Sports Centre, it won’t be enough to carry out the planned expansion of the facilities, including five extra tennis courts and four squash courts. Rudi Oudijk, the Sports Centre president, isn’t worried though, because the TU is trying to buy the meadow between the Rotterdamseweg and the Korvezee housing complex. It will be converted into new sports fields. By building the new sports halls and courts compactly, space problems will disappear, apparently.
