‘TU Delft should make greater efforts to prevent mouse arms’At least ninety students and employees of TU Delft have severe symptoms of repetitive strain injury (RSI), or mouse arm.
They are being treated by either a TU Delft physiotherapist or doctor. Physiotherapist Jeroen Gerrissen advises mouse arm sufferers to exercise a lot, rather than give in to the pain and become inactive. Student Health Care offers prevention courses for students, but the university should do more to prevent RSI, according to Dr. Wim van Donselaar. ‘In places where student work long hours, the furniture should be ergonomically safe.’ Moreover, students should be warned about RSI in their freshmen year. According to Gerrissen, the university must do more to educate people about the RSI risks involved in high-pressure professions and inappropriate working positions.
‘Pay good students to work out their designs’
Members of the student council party, Aag, and the student organisation, VSSD, want the executive board to pay good students to develop scientifically promising, or commercially interesting, designs, and to let these students use the university’s facilities. This will stimulate students to do better work, the designs would help promote the university’s reputation. Rector Wakker has promised to study the proposal, which would cost about 400,000 guilders.
